The Grand Reopening of the Newly Refurbished
Sir Mohamed Macan Markar Memorial Library

Al Bahjathul Ibraheemiyyah Arabic College in Fort-Galle proudly celebrated the reopening of the newly refurbished Sir Mohamed Macan Markar Memorial Library on October 17, 2024. The library, originally inaugurated on October 24, 1992, by Deshamaniya Hon. Alhaj M.A. Bakeer Markar, serves as a valuable resource for Islamic scholars and students alike. The refurbishment reflects the college’s commitment to preserving and advancing Islamic knowledge in Sri Lanka.

The event was graced by Hon. Justice Muhammad Ahsan Marikar, Judge of the Court of Appeal, alongside distinguished guests, trustees, college staff, students, and members of the Macan Markar family. The ceremony began with prayers at the Galle Fort Jumma Mosque, followed by a procession to the college. Hon. Justice Marikar officially opened the library, cutting the ribbon and inviting guests to explore the modernized facilities.

During the event, Chairman Mr. Nuski Mohamed highlighted the extensive renovation project, funded generously by family members, alumni, and well-wishers. The project not only preserves rare manuscripts and historical texts but also marks the start of a new digital initiative to archive and protect these invaluable resources for future generations. Mr. Mohamed also announced an educational tour for students as a gesture of appreciation for their support in the renovation project.

The Director of Studies, Moulavi Fazil Bahji, and other notable speakers emphasized the college’s role in providing free education, meals, and accommodation for over 130 years, producing graduates who are known for their depth of knowledge and dedication to service. The event concluded with a heartfelt dua, celebrating a legacy of learning and excellence in Islamic education that continues to inspire the community.
